I remember as a kid being taken by grandpa and grandma to relatives’ wedding banquets /
there always had to be a big flower-truck stage
a giant 囍 (double happiness) sign and dazzling lights
the music always louder than the MC
I always looked forward to the dishes at the open-air banquet
eating a neighborhood banquet together with everyone on the street was so lively
Even though you rarely see open-air banquets in the city anymore
whenever a couple tells us their banquet is an open-air feast, or that they’re marrying by ox cart
we get really excited
because we’re young people from the countryside (saying it once more, haha)
with souls full of traditional culture
Even though outdoor weddings and hotel weddings are the trend nowadays
Taiwan’s own traditional customs are still well worth preserving
and styles can still be blended beautifully.
